Certificate III in Laboratory Skills

This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a limited range of laboratory operations across all industry sectors and is the entry level required for laboratory personnel in many industry sectors such as construction, materials testing, environmental monitoring, food testing, pathology testing and mineral assaying.

Students contemplating engineering or science pathways like scientific research, biomedical science, chemical engineering, or similar will also benefit from the practical skills gained in this course.

Prerequisites

To be considered for this program, students must have successfully completed Year 9 Maths. 

Box Hill Institute will only accept Year 11 and 12 applicants.

Holmesglen Institute will be screening students for suitability via an internal assessment.

Students who may be interested in this course please contact your school VET Coordinator to discuss your application. Schools must send an expression of interest to healthsciences@holmesglen.edu.au prior to 24th August 2022 to arrange the assessment.

Additional Requirements/Information

Normal school wear including closed-toed shoes should be worn. All items such as safety glasses, lab coats and gloves will be provided to students. 

Program Content

Sample competencies covered in Units 1 & 2 include: 

  • Plan and conduct laboratory/field work
  • Receive and prepare samples for testing
  • Perform basic tests

Sample competencies covered in Units 3 & 4 include:

  • Perform aseptic techniques
  • Prepare working solutions
  • Perform microscopic examination

Work placement

Work placement is not required.

Contribution to VCE/VCAL/Vocational Major

VCE/VCAL/VM: Students may be eligible to receive recognition of up to three units at the Units 1 & 2 level and a VCE VET Units 3 & 4 sequence.

ATAR: Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for the Units 3 & 4 sequence must undertake scored assessment for the purpose of gaining a study score. This study score can contribute directly to the primary four or as a fifth or sixth study. VCAL and the VCE Vocational Major do not contribute towards an ATAR.
