Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care SBAT (SBAT)
This SBAT provides learners with a full completion of Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. The course covers the requirements to become an Early Childhood Educator who plans and provides early childhood education and care for infants and children in their early years of development.
Early Childhood educators are actively involved in educating and caring for children to ensure
they gain the knowledge, skills, and attributes that allow children to make the most of their potential. Career opportunities in the sector continue to increase, and the demand for trained educators is projected to grow rapidly in the future.

Additional Requirements/Information
Students over 18 are required to hold a working with children check prior to commencement of employment or at the time they turn 18 if during employment. Students under 18 are encouraged to hold a working with children check as some services require this.
This is a one-year program (with the opportunity to extend if required).
Please note: Students will need to attend class in the September school holidays. First aid may be completed on a weekend or during the school holidays.
Program Content

- Support children’s health, safety and wellbeing
- Promote innovation in team environments
- Provide experiences to support children’s play and learning
- Support inclusion and diversity, encourage understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ culture
Career opportunities
Graduates can work in any of the following programs/roles:
- Long Day Care
- Occasional Care
- School-age Care
- Preschool
- Family day care
- Aides for children with additional needs
Work placement
Students are required to attain part-time employment as a component of their studies for at least one full day per week. This is in addition to class attendance requirements.
Students are employed to work 1 day a week (7 hours minimum) for the entirety of the course. Students need to be aware that by completing this program they are paid employees (it is not voluntary placement).
Contribution to VCE/VCAL/Vocational Major
VCE/VCAL/VM: There are some changes to how SBATs can contribute to the VCE/VCAL/VCE Vocational Major certificates in 2023, this information is published in the School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) section. VCAL and the VCE Vocational Major do not contribute towards an ATAR.
